Shiatsu~Japanese Acupressure Therapy
Ancient Theory, Modern Practice
Shiatsu is a versatile and subtle Japanese body therapy, rooted in health care practices from ancient China, together with a modern understanding of the workings of the body from a structural perspective.
This combination of Eastern and Western understanding acknowledges the interconnection of the body and mind, creating a profound approach to healing.
•
Shiatsu is deeply relaxing,
- a balm for the “dis-eases” of body and mind.
•
•
The major focus of shiatsu is on improving health by restoring internal balance, rather than focusing on the symptoms of disease alone.
Having said that, shiatsu is effective in treating a wide range of health complaints, (the meaning of “dis-ease” is “not at ease“ - in other words, stress is at the root of most health problems).
In Japan people seek out a licensed shiatsu therapist for health reasons, rather than pleasure, and it is considered a form of medical treatment.
•
The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare defines shiatsu as follows:
“Shiatsu technique refers to the use of fingers and palm of one’s hand to apply pressure to particular sections on the surface of the body for the purpose of correcting the imbalances of the body, and for maintaining and promoting health. It is also a method contributing to the healing of specific illnesses.”
•
Shiatsu relaxes the physical body and calms the nervous system, and in this balanced state, internal repair resources can function effectively to restore your body and mind.
•
This video clip gives a good sense of what it is like to receive shiatsu.

• Headaches & migraines
• Stress, anxiety, depression,
• Insomnia, chronic fatigue
• Sports/work injuries, (chronic & acute):

My own experience with Shiatsu
I discovered shiatsu in the mid eighties at a time when I was under a huge amount of stress.
Shiatsu didn’t just make me feel physically better for an hour or two, I felt completely restored; relaxed, and energized at the same time.
Shiatsu opened up a whole different sense of myself. and got me unstuck; things that I had been struggling with were resolved.
I found that I had much more energy and have been amazed at how consistently clients have reported similar experiences, even using similar language. I knew instinctively that this is how we are supposed to feel. and knew I had to find out more…..(see ‘About Robin Grant” in the side-bar).
•
“These early experiences continue to inspire me today. It is my joy and great privilege to bring the benefits of this wonderful ancient treatment to the highly stressed modern world.”
•
I see myself as a facilitator, helping you to “re-member” (literally to put back together again) the optimally healthy you, that you may have “forgotten”.
The experience of mind/body integration has profound health implications: we simply function better and enjoy greater physical, mental and emotional well-being.

I searched on google and I had a hard time located the right info….until I found your blog.
While this issue can be very tough for most people, my opinion is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do appreciate that you’ve added relevant and rational commentary here though. Very much thanks to you!
